A beautiful, black, 50 year old female painter wearing a painting apron looks to the sky. Sunshine in her face, she stands in front of her easel, and a mural is behind her, as is a gunshot hole in the window of the building.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Catherine Dudley-Rose

BrokeStrings captures the struggles of female and under-represented artists who are willing to sacrifice a great deal to stay true to their creative voice. The primary setting of St. Louis and downtown NYC in the 90’s is where BROKESTRINGS springs forth.

The trail of connections between artists of all types is both interlocked (like a chord)

and separate (broken).

Liberation. Freedom. Self Expression.

The value of finding one’s own creative voice cannot be underestimated.

The story will appeal to anyone who has tried to find their way where the path is unclear.

The visual aesthetic is gritty, urban, and realistically captures the hardship and perseverance of the characters in a highly charged, frenetic environment.

The formal and controlled, ornate world of classical music filters through providing contrast.

Authenticity is key. Escaping to NYC as a female in the 90’s with $100 and creative drive, I found like-minded artists determined to find a way to live life on their own terms, and stay true to their calling. With an intense background in classical music, a passion for theatre,
jazz, dance, poetry and art, I’ve seen firsthand the interplay of the arts and how they can be used to unify us in turbulent times.
